Treating Alcohol Addiction: An Alternative Indigenous Medication for Alcohol Detoxification

Abstract

None of society is without alcohol, it was part of every civilizations, where it is used asmedicine in modern treatments, a catalyst in religious ceremonies and are holy in various rituals. Its excessuse creates serious problems in the society. India, being the third largest liquor market and the consumptionof alcohol remains as a threat. Where the status of the Kerala the highest literate state, which is the hub oflargest number of alcoholics and is considered as the booziest state. The records explicit the alarming statistics of

highest per capita consumption of alcohol that is more than 1.76 gallons per person a year in thenation, overtaking traditionally hard-drinking states of India. In this juncture the relevance of therehabilitation of the alcoholics becomes important. But the increasing rehabilitation centres inside andoutside Kerala fails to control the tolerance of being alcoholic were the patients are unable to repel thewithdrawal symptom. In this stage the relevance of the traditional medicinal practice of the Mavilan tribebecomes as an alternative. The indigenous practices cures and detoxificates the alcoholic in natural way.This paper is an ethnographic observation of the indigenous medication for alcohol detoxification and deaddiction.
