Abstract
The dilatant transformation model earlier developed is extended for two applications. First, the effect on toughness of inhomogeneous distributions of tetragonal zirconia particles is investigated. Second, the shear component of the t → m transformation is taken into account and the effects on the shape and magnitude of the transformation zone and the toughness are determined. Both problems are investigated using numerical analysis to determine the development of the transformation zone and the toughness during mode I crack growth.
