Abstract

In spite of the worldwide, and in some places frightening, increase of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), the Netherlands has so far succeeded in keeping the MRSA prevalence low. Most MRSA cases in the Netherlands result from patients being admitted from foreign country hospitals. Spreading of MRSA must be prevented by all possible means. This article deals with MRSA epidemiology and guidelines for diagnosis, infection prevention and treatment. Unfortunately, not all countries in the world have the financial and personal support, necessary to implement this strategy, or an infection control service. Furthermore, many countries lack good antibiotic policies in and outside the hospital.
