    Abstract

Since Lenski's (1963) contention of a still vigorous 'religious factor', American sociology
has seen a prolonged debate on the impact of religion on family and parental child-rearing
orientations. Recently Alwin (1986) has given strong evidence that differences among
denominations per se have become less significant, while it is the strength of religious
involvement that continues to have a strong impact. In this article we investigate whether
there is evidence of a religious factor in the Netherlands, and if so how it interacts with the
    family's socioeconomic status.
Our analysis compares parental child-rearing orientations in two Dutch cohort samples,
a national representative sample of mixed religious composition and a sample from
orthodox Reformed families; in both the same data were collected. Our findings indicate
that child-rearing orientations in families with a strong religious involvement do not differ
from those in other families, but they are less dependent on the family's socioeconomic
    status.
