Abstract
By definition, phytomedicines are complex preparations, of which the quality is determined by a large variety of factors in the production process. The production process includes cultivation and harvesting of the plant material, the preparation of a semi-manufactured product (extract) and the preparation of a finished product. Quality assurance and quality control should take place in all of these stages. This is essential for the pharmacological, toxicological and clinical evaluation of phytomedicines and for their standardisation on biologically active constituents or marker substances with respect to a rational use and legal registration.
