Description
This lecture will discuss multiple ways in which the principles of traditional anthropological fieldwork can help researchers to gain access to and make sense of people’s digital practices. Contrary to what is often believed, there is a high level of commonality between digital and offline worlds. Drawing on my research on the uses and consequences of social media in southeast Turkey and northern Italy, I show that the principles that lie at the heart of traditional ethnography - immersion in the field, long-term duration, and flexibility to the contingencies of the research as they arise - continue to be of crucial importance for online and digital ethnography.
