Three stories of how I watch you at work: how technology shapes workplace surveillance, hierarchies and how to protect workers’ rights

Description

Watching their employees is an activity inextricably linked to a boss' work routine. Tracking employees' presence, productivity, or the safety of working environments fulfils various organisational and legal requirements. While we have been accustomed since the industrial revolutions to work under the eyes of human supervisors, this surveillance is now 'disappearing' behind screens, sensors, and cameras. In this talk, I present three stories of contemporary workplace surveillance to show how labour protection must tighten its meshes if it is to measure against exacerbated hierarchies at work.
