Description
On two half days on 28 and 29 April, an online event on freedom of political speech took place, organised by the Global Studies Institute of the University of Geneva with the support of the Council of Europe. Members of parliaments, scientists, experts from the Council of Europe, of other organisations and of civil society discussed, in four consecutive roundtables, the importance of freedom of speech of politicians and of candidates and the limits of this freedom. They also discussed, how far possible restrictions of this freedom can go, and how to assess and justify the effects on a democratic society of limitations to this freedom. Council of Europe participants included the Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić, the Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatovic, the Director General for Human Rights and the Rule of Law Christos Giakoumopoulos, and the Head of the Information Society Department Patrick Penninckx.Period | 28-Apr-2022 |
